Vermont's Changing Capital
In 1808 the general assembly met for the first time in
their permanent
home of Montpelier.
Prior to that time, the assembly met in various
towns throughout what is now known as Vermont. Students discussed
where Vermont's capital was located over time and why the changes of location
happened. Questions: Why did the general assembly switch meeting
locations (every two years) moving from the east side to the west side of the state?
Why did the first meetings occur in the southern part of the state and move north? Why
weren't meetings held in locations in the middle of the state? What happened
to the first state house in Montpelier? What happened to the second state house?
Go the Distance
Students used their feet as a unit of measure to estimate
the distances of various Vermont features.
